Established in 1964, the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species has evolved to become the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global extinction risk status of animal, fungus and plant species. The Sistema Estadual de Unidades de Conservação - SEUC provides two groups of Conservation Units: Integral Protection (de Proteção Integral) and Sustainable Development (de Desenvolvimento Sustentável). The Integral Protection Units have as basic objective the preservation of nature, being admitted only the indirect use of its natural resources. The Sustainable Use Units have as basic objective to make nature conservation compatible with the sustainable use of part of their natural resources.

Biodiversity Intactness Index:
The Biodiversity Intactness Index (BII) estimates how the average abundance of native terrestrial species in a region compares with their abundances before pronounced human impacts. A value around 50% indicates that the species originally present are on average only half as abundant compared with pristine conditions (pre-industrial climate period).
